Facelifts: Facts and Fiction

Are you considering a facelift but feel like it might make your face look too fake or any other common misconceptions you’ve heard? We’re here to provide you with the facts about facelift procedures and how to decide whether it may be right for you.

  1. Facelifts make your face look “stretched” or fake

While it’s true that a facelift aims to tighten your skin, your facelift should look natural and not be pulled so tight that your face would have a stretched look to it. A facelift tightens the skin, removes excess fat, and tightens the underlying muscles giving you that youthful, younger appearance.

  1. A well-performed facelift doesn’t leave scars

All surgical procedures will leave scars, no matter how “well-performed” it is. We do take this into account however and typically hide incisions in natural skin creases and in the hair. Most patients and friends won’t be able to locate their incision scars weeks after surgery, so don’t let this misconception deter you.

  1. Botox and fillers achieve the same results

While Botox and other fillers can provide amazing results, they still aren’t a replacement for cosmetic surgery. Injectables are useful for reducing the appearance of fine lines, shadows, and can even add volume to your cheeks and lips. However, these results are temporary and do not provide enough of a correction of the cheek bones, jawline, jowls, and loose neck skin. Fillers can still deliver impressive results, but they might not address the same issues as a facelift would.

  1. Facelifts are only for women

More and more men are actually opting for facelift surgery. While the demand for female procedures has remained the same, demand for male facelift surgery has increased by 20% since 2000. Men are also looking for ways to look younger and gain an edge in their professional and personal lives and a facelift may help in some of those cases.

  1. Facelifts are only for older people

Everyone has different skin and aesthetic goals. Your skin and face may age at a different rate than other people depending on your genetics, lifestyle, and other factors.
