The Basics of Botox

Botox is one of the most well-known cosmetic procedures around. With so much hype around it in the media, it’s easy to have heard misinformation or misconceptions that aren’t actually true. We’d like to clear up some of these myths and explain what Botox is really like and how it can make you feel more confident in a simple session.

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that is commonly used to minimize lines and wrinkles. Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world with more than 7 million treatments performed last year.

Is Botox Painful?

This procedure is not considered painful but may be briefly uncomfortable for patients.

How Soon Will I See Results?

It usually takes between 3-5 days to see the effects of Botox and up to 2 weeks to see the full effect. This varies from patient to patient however so you may see results sooner or later than that.

How Long Does Botox Last?

Typically, results last between 3-6 months after the date of injection. Over time, your body will slowly return to normal and you’ll need more injections to keep up your results. Many patients choose to maintain their Botox results by undergoing periodic treatments every 3-4 months.

When Should I Start Getting Botox?

Botox has certain connotations to it that make patients wonder if they’re “too young” or “too old” to try it. However, this is completely arbitrary. Many people start to use Botox in their twenties when they first start to notice lines as a way to prevent the lines getting deeper. We’ll discuss during your consultation whether Botox is right for you, so there’s really no “right” age.

Are There Side Effects?

As with any procedure, there may be side effects from getting Botox. Some of these include bruising, redness, swelling, and tenderness around the injection site. These side effects should resolve on their own within a few days to a week. If they last longer, don’t hesitate to call our office for advice, though it’s unlikely.
